You gotta love computers. The second I sent the last e-mail, the
compiler failed with "template instantiation depth exceeded". :-(
Actually, you'll need -ftemplate-depth-64 in order to compile the
library and all self-tests successfully with gcc 3.1 (and probably
earlier versions as well).
