Mandrake based their whole 8.x series (three releases) on gcc 2.96. So
it can't be the worst compiler out there. I definitely agree that every
gcc release from 2.95.x onwards needs to be supported for quite some
time to come.
BTW: I think in hindsight it was a good idea of RedHat to include this
version in their distribution. It has drawn a lot of attention to the
gcc 3.0 branch.
