Well, to minimize our headaches (i.e. having to keep up with FFTW
changes), it might make sense to just have an autodetect for fftw in
the configure, with a --with-fftw override or somesuch. Otherwise
we'll have to track the FFTW changes. I think the number of users
who actually need FFTs is comparatively small. How does that
sound?
