Hi Todd,
I've been out of the Blitz loop for a while. How are things going down at
Indiana? Are you finding much time to work on Blitz?
As you can see from the most recent Beta program announcement, Intel is now
getting aggressive in soliciting performance feedback.
At this point the only feature Intel C++ seems to lack is template arguments
of type template.
I hope that this time my plans to focus on porting Blitz will not be
interrupted. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on where you see Blitz
going over the next year or so.
cheers,
Allan

Subject: Intel C/C++ Compiler ready for Beta Testing
Dear Developer: December 1998
You have been selected to participate in the Beta Test program for the
VTune(tm) Performance Enhancement Environment. At this time, all the
components on the CD are not ready to be tested, however, the compiler has
undergone an extensive Alpha Test program and is in very good shape. It can
be now be downloaded from the web site:
http://developer.intel.com/design/perftool/vt40dnld.htm
Please note that the URL of this web site is not linked to any other web
sites and must be entered by hand. The password to install the compiler is:
VT4-B1!
The following are the significant changes to the C/C++ compiler:
* Improved performance of generated code
The compiler's ability to produce optimized code has been greatly enhanced.
If you do not see at least a 5% performance improvement over code generated
by a Microsoft* Visual C++ compiler, we would be very interested in trying
to understand why. If it is possible for you to send in a test case which
demonstrates this condition, we will analyze it and share our findings with
you.
In addition, if you are aware of optimizations which would benefit your
application that the compiler does not perform, we would be very willing to
discuss them with you.
* Processor-Dispatching Support
This new feature allows versions of code specific to different Intel
processors to exist in a single binary but executes only the code for the
actual processor in the system.
Refer to the Processor-Dispatching Support section in Chapter 13 of the
Intel C/C++ Compiler User's Guide for Win32* Systems for details on the
cpu_dispatch and cpu_specific declaration modifiers.
* Microsoft* Visual C++ 6.0 language extensions and compatibility
The compiler can now plug into the Microsoft Developer's Studio 6.0
environment.
If you need to report a problem, discuss an issue or to contact us for any
reason regarding the compiler, please use the web form at:
http://support.intel.com/support/performancetools/c/csubmit.htm
Sincerely,
Bruce Bartlett
