I've had to deal with irrational management that wouldn't allow C++
unless it was as fast as FORTRAN, even for wretchedly complicated codes
for which FORTRAN was unsuitable.
Of course, once I got the C++ to outrun the FORTRAN, I got a lot of
requests to translate more FORTRAN into C++. The vendor for the
machine in question had a terrible FORTRAN compiler, and I had ported
the much better GNU C++ to the machine. Indeed, KCC's optimizer is
is designed to be what I wanted back then.
On the other hand, we were scheduling CPU-month jobs, so %50 could translate
to a week or two.
