C++ vs Fortran for Scientific Computing? I'm having my students write
code in Scheme (using Gambit-C, by Marc Feeley) with OO extensions
(Meroon, by Christian Queinnec) for a class project to implement the
Finite Element Method for elliptic and parabolic problems (triangulating
polygons, isoperimetric elements, mesh refinement, conjugate gradient,
conjugate residual, multigrid, etc., if all goes well). The projects
aren't done yet, but there is some code at
http://www.math.purdue.edu/~lucier/615/
At the end of the semester I'll release the version of Meroon that
I'm using (or perhaps Queinnec will merge the changes into the general
release) so that others can try the programs.
It seems to be fairly fast; e.g., my second generation sparse
matrix--vector multiply with a single right hand side takes 17 cycles
per flop on my Alpha 21264.
