Last week SGI released the Linux/IA-64 version of their compiler as
open source. Since IA-64 hardware (Itanium/Merced) isn't generally
available yet their compiler isn't immediately usable, but in the
future it could be a terrific compiler for OO numerics.
Their compiler combines--
* the gcc C/C++ front ends
* Fortran 90/95 front ends
* SGI's WHIRL intermediate representation
* SGI's state-of-the-art code optimizer, including loop nest
optimizations, interprocedural (whole-program) optimizations,
profile-directed feedback, etc. -- lots of stuff not implemented
by gcc
* SGI's optimizing IA-64 back end

Pro64 will run with HP's Linux/IA-64 simulator. Unfortunately
I cannot find their simulator anywhere on the web. The links from
SGi's Pro64 page are broken. Anyone know if HP's simulator has been
released?
Big cheers to the SGI compiler team!
